Message From the Mayor

Robert Halfacre

I truly hope everyone had a blessed and enjoyable Holiday season!

As we start 2024, it’s important to acknowledge and celebrate what we accomplished in 2023. Before I highlight some of the major achievements in the community, I want to acknowledge how well our City employees go about attaining our daily goal of delivering efficient and quality core services. A big thank you to them for keeping our community clean, safe, and prosperous!

  • In June, City Council approved the Fiscal Year 24 annual budget, which includes impactful investments in staff, infrastructure, equipment, vehicles, and transit.
  • The On The Ave and Rock the Block outdoor dining and concert series were a huge hit this past summer and early Fall. These outdoor events brought the community together socially and supported local businesses during their quieter times.
  • In January, the City kicked off a tree planting campaign labelled #growagreenerclemson. With support from TreesUpstate, Green Crescent Trail, Duke Energy, Clemson Downs, Clemson United Methodist Church, and the overall community, the City hosted two tree giveaway events and arranged tree plantings at Clemson Downs and beside the Clemson United Methodist Church.
  • The City completed Phase I of the Green Crescent Trail. This amazing walking/biking path is 1.5 miles long and connects Gateway Park to Clemson Elementary.
  • The City has received $2.6 million of federal funding to acquire land and install infrastructure for attainable housing. More information to come!
  • The Parks and Recreation Department had a busy year with numerous events including Movies on the Green, Yoga for You, Picnic in the Park, and a very successful Christmas parade (just to name a few).
  • Pop in the Park, a craft show featuring local artists, was a new, free event hosted at Gateway Park by the Arts Center.
  • The City partnered with the City of Seneca and Clemson University to host an impactful Juneteenth Celebration.

I would also like to acknowledge the multitude of achievements of our local schools and their students, including Daniel High School’s state championship wins for marching band, football, and soccer and Clemson University’s national championship win in soccer.

Finally, we are incredibly fortunate to have three institutions of higher education within seven miles of our City. These colleges and universities offer a number of resources, services, and opportunities to all of our residents that are not often available in cities of our size. Clemson University in particular is our primary industry; therefore it is vital that we strive to work together. I am incredibly proud of the progress we have made fostering the City/Clemson University relationship, and I look forward to continued progress over the coming year. While it is not a perfect relationship, we are focusing on more frequent and open communication through monthly meetings, putting in the work to strengthen and enhance our connection, and ensuring that we follow through on joint initiatives.

This page provides some information on just a few of the collaborative efforts between the City and University and how we are working together for the good of all.

As always, I want to hear from you! I use social media as a way to distribute information but never as a catalyst for conversation. Call me (864-888-7127)! If you see me out in our community, stop me. I am happy to sit down over a cup of coffee. Let’s Talk!
