Census Day is April 1st, 2020

Event date: 4/1/2020 Export event

The US Constitution mandates a national Census every ten years in an effort to count every person living in the US once – and only once – and in the right place.

Data from the decennial census are crucial in determining resources to be distributed to each community.  More specifically, these data are used to:

  • Reapportion seats in the House of Representives
  • Redraw congressional and state legislative districts.
  • Determine how $675 billion in federal money are funneled to state, county, and community programs.
  • Decide where businesses should build new locations.
  • Decide where new homes should be built or which old neighborhoods should be revitalized.
  • Support various community initiatives within communities.
  • Ensure adequate public safety and emergency preparedness.

By April 1st, 2020, every home should receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census. You will have three options for responding: online, by phone, or by mail. In some circumstances, or if you have not completed the Census by May, you may also have a Census worker come to your home to complete the questions with you.
