Bryant Smith nominated his wife and current Council member and Mayor Pro Tem Alesia Smith for recognition for Black History Month. Below is Mr. Smith's nomination for Alesia.
"Alesia was the first African-American female to lead the Discipline office at Clemson University. She has served the community as a volunteer basketball coach for more than 12 years producing several Division one female athletes. She also served as the Head Women’s basketball coach for Edwards Middle School and Tri-County Technical College, before budget cuts forced them to eliminate their team. She has also served as President of the Edwards Middle School Parent Teachers Association, and has been actively involved in serving the community through her membership in Rotary, and her sorority Delta Sigma Theta.
Alesia has served on numerous committees in the city and the university which have helped to increase diversity, attract new families and businesses and help improve the overall quality of life for all Clemson residents. Alesia Smith is currently serving her first term on the Clemson City Council and is only the second African-American woman to hold a seat on the council. In her current professional role Alesia serves as the Executive Director of Equity Compliance and the University’s Title IX Coordinator. She is also the current Chairperson of the Clemson University Commission on the Black Experience. Alesia is a trusted community resource who continues to give voice to the voiceless in our community and serve as a bridge between groups that sometimes would rather not be connected. I ask that you recognize her as a Black History Maker in Clemson."
