Arch 4990/8320 students develop COVID solutions for outdoor venues

ARCH 4990/8320 Community 1:1 engages critical and creative thinking coupled full-scale design projects that are community-based in nature.  Emphasis is placed on building infrastructure for a community, or series of communities, that supports connectivity, explores aspects of human nature, and social trends.  Interacting directly with the City of Clemson, students teams took a thorough and proactive approach to developing COVID solutions for parks, restaurants, and other outdoor venues.  Student teams developed portable modules that could be prepackaged, flat shipped, folded, easily moved, and constructed for less than the cost of an outdoor bar table as way to encourage social distancing, allow outdoor seating dining, but also provide alternative uses during a post-COVID world.  The module’s structure allows for movement that transforms the park bar table into an Adirondack chair with shade canopy; when two modules are placed together, they are exactly six feet apart.  Teams built one out of dimensional lumber and the second out of recycled materials from local construction sites.
