Abernathy Rebuild Day 6

Abernathy Rebuild Day 6

March 24th, 2018

The day was mostly cloudy, and what little bit of rain we had did not last long. The morning was comfortable, but the day grew cooler as the wind picked up. So we had hot coffee this morning, but the fire came later in the day. We again had a combination of first time volunteers and repeat volunteers who spent some of their Saturdays to complete a significant portion of the decking then getting the park back in safe condition so that the boardwalks can be reopened to the public. Mayor J.C. Cook, who has been working at the park all week, and City Administrator Rick Cotton, who came out to work on Wednesday, both donated their Saturdays as well. Pickens County Councilman Ensley Feemster also came back out today and spent a few hours working on the boardwalks as well. Meanwhile, our landscaping crew removed a lot of brush before transitioning to litter pickup towards the end of the day.

Again, we would like to extend the most sincere thank you to anyone and everyone who has helped in the rebuild effort in any way. We've been very excited to see how many people have all come out to help restore this beloved park. Today marked the final day of the Abernathy Rebuild Community Project. While the redecking is not complete, we are a lot further than we would have been without the help of everyone who donated their time and energy to helping restore a beloved community park. It will likely be a few months before all of the decking is replaced, and the hand rails will eventually be replaced as well.

Keep an eye out for before and after photos and project details!
