City of Clemson Announces Black History Month Plan

Clemson, SC -- For this year’s Black History Month, the City of Clemson has adopted the theme “Honoring Our Past, Celebrating Our Present, and Planning Our Future.”

During the month of February, in recognition of Black History Month and this theme, a past member of the Clemson community will be honored as we share their historical contributions, and a current member will be recognized to celebrate their contributions to the betterment of the City of Clemson and surrounding communities.   The individual(s) will be highlighted on the City of Clemson’s website every Thursday, and a proclamation will be presented by Mayor Halfacre from City Council during City Council meetings. Nominations may be submitted for consideration, and honorees will be selected by City Council.

On Friday, February 19th at 9am, the Clemson Area African American Museum will host a Black History Month Virtual Breakfast. Then, on Tuesday, February 23rd at 6:30pm, the museum will host a Fireside Chat with Dr. Ashra Kwesi (moderated by Bryant Smith). Dr. Kwesi is a historian and lecturer on ancient African history and religion. He has nearly forty years of study and tour experience in the African Nile Valley, and during fourteen of these years, he served as an assistant to the noted Kemetologist, Dr. Yosef Ben Jochannan. Dr. Kwesi has performed extensive historical research on location in Egypt, Ethiopia, Uganda, Sudan, Kenya, and Ghana and has lectured at universities and organizations around the world.

Clemson University will also be hosting a variety of programs based on their theme of “Black Lives: Justice, Truth, and Nothing But.” More information about these programs is located on the University’s website at https://www.clemson.edu/centers-institutes/gantt/multicultural-programs/blackhistorymonth.html.
